How does an artist respond when war and suffering become deeply personal?

Spend a quieter morning at the Museum exploring Figures of Anguish, Figures of Compassion: Pierre Daura and the Spanish Civil War, a powerful exhibition spotlight drawn from the Taubman Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection.

Catalan-American artist Pierre Daura was living in France when the Spanish Civil War engulfed his homeland. Deeply concerned for the people of Spain, Daura worked to aid refugees before enlisting in the Spanish Republican Army in 1937. He was stationed in Teruel, one of the war’s most intense conflict areas, and eventually rose to the rank of lieutenant before an injury sent him home to his family in France.

The experience marked a turning point in both Daura’s life and his art. During this special Member Hour, explore works that reveal how he centered the human experience amid war and violence, while expressing the emotional sensitivity, social awareness, and compassion that became increasingly important in his work.

Enjoy complimentary coffee, take your time in the galleries before the Museum opens to the public, and discover the deeply personal story behind these works from the Taubman’s collection.

Members are encouraged to bring up to two paying guests for this special morning program.
