Realistic painter, muralist and lithographer, Joseph Hirsch studied art at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art while also apprenticing under artist George Luks. In the 1930s, he was employed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), further being awarded Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships. A social realist, Hirsch was well known for capturing humanity’s social consciousness in ordinary, everyday scenes such as pictured here.
