75th Anniversary: New Visions for the Permanent Collection
For 75 years, the Museum’s Permanent Collection has been shaped by landmark gifts, sustained generosity, and careful stewardship. What began as a regional commitment to art has grown into a collection defined by depth, continuity, and evolving perspective.
This exhibition reflects both history and momentum. At its core are gifts made in honor of the Museum’s 75th Anniversary — works that expand the Collection across media, cultures, and time periods. Installed in dialogue with longstanding holdings, these new acquisitions illuminate established strengths while opening new areas of inquiry.
Washington’s Greatest Victory: Yorktown and American Art
In 1781, the Siege of Yorktown secured George Washington’s greatest military victory and effectively ended the Revolutionary War.
Organized in collaboration with George Washington’s Mount Vernon and presented in celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence, this exhibition explores how artists have interpreted Yorktown and shaped its place in national memory.
VMFA on the Road: Virginia as America
Featuring works of art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ permanent collection, this traveling exhibition was organized in recognition of VA250, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, the Revolutionary War, and the Independence of the United States.
Virginia as America: Navigating Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness explores the American ideal that was first expressed in the Declaration of Independence. The evocative phrase “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” founded a nation on a promise of “inalienable” rights, a promise that has endured for 250 years.
From the collection at VMFA, 14 works of art—paintings, prints, and decorative objects—provide an alternative lens by which to understand our past, encouraging us to consider the hopes and challenges of those founding principles and their persistent relevance for realizing a “more perfect union.”

The Permanent Collection
The Taubman Museum of Art has more than 2,000 works in the collection, from the 10-foot sculpture Art World by James Harold Jennings to the inch-and-a-half square photograph Maggie on Beach with Dog by Thomas Cowperthwaite Eakins, and from 3,500-year-old Egyptian Ushabiti ceramic figures to contemporary Roanoke artists.
These works are shown on a rotating basis in exhibitions in the Fralin Center for American Art, the Museum’s main gallery level on the second floor. Explore a sample of selected works from the collection below.
