START: Positive and Negative Space
Jan 09, 2026
1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Welcome to START, a series designed for artists ages 10 and up!
Whether you’re a total beginner or looking for an artistic refresher, this class is for you.
Each month, we will explore a new topic to help you build a strong foundation and expand your knowledge and skills in the arts.
This month, we’ll learn about the relationship between positive and negative space.
We’ll start out by looking at masterpieces such as cut-outs of Henri Matisse and tessellations of M.C. Escher. After exploring how these artists used “empty” space to create their work, you will apply these concepts through the traditional Japanese design practice of Notan, using paper-cutting techniques to transform flat paper into dynamic, high-contrast compositions.
Registration is required.
