SUMMARY:Exhibition on Screen - John Singer Sargent: Fashion and Swagger
DESCRIPTION:International Wine Festival 2027 \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n	\n \n\nJohn Singer Sargent is known as the greatest portrait artist of his era. What made his ‘swagger’ portraits remarkable was his power over his sitters\, what they wore and how they were presented to the audience. Through interviews with curators\, contemporary fashionistas and style influencers\, Exhibition on Screen’s film will examine how Sargent’s unique practice has influenced modern art\, culture and fashion. \n\n\n\nFilmed at the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston and the Tate Britain\, London\, the exhibition reveals Sargent’s power to express distinctive personalities\, power dynamics and gender identities during this fascinating period of cultural reinvention. Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent sit stunning items of clothing and accessories worn by his subjects\, drawing the audience into the artist’s studio. Sargent’s sitters were often wealthy\, their clothes costly\, but what happens when you turn yourself over to the hands of a great artist? The manufacture of public identity is as controversial and contested today as it was at the turn of the 20th century\, but somehow Sargent’s work transcends the social noise and captures an alluring truth with each brush stroke. \n\n\n\nRegistration required. \n\n\n\n$10 Members | $15 General Public \n\n\n\nYou can view a film trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RT7RSSsfWLY \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? SUMMARY:Morning Muse with the Curator: Judy Chicago and Nadya Tolokonnikova
DESCRIPTION:International Wine Festival 2027 \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n	\n \n\nStart your day with creativity at the Taubman Museum of Art’s Morning Muse\, a new program bringing people together for coffee\, conversation\, and fresh ideas. \n\n\n\nEnjoy time to mingle before a short talk with Laura K. Higgins\, Curator of 75th Anniversary Gifts to the Permanent Collection\, who will explore recent additions to the Museum’s Permanent Collection by Judy Chicago and Nadya Tolokonnikova\, two artists whose work engages themes of gender\, power\, and resistance across generations and global contexts. \n\n\n\nA pioneering figure of the Feminist Art Movement\, Judy Chicago has spent decades advocating for the recognition of women’s history and creative labor. Her lithograph currently on view\, Signing the Dinner Party\, references her iconic installation The Dinner Party\, using powerful symbolism to assert women’s presence in cultural history. \n\n\n\nNearby\, Nadya Tolokonnikova\, an artist\, activist\, and founding member of Pussy Riot\, reimagines objects shaped by her experience of imprisonment. In Knife Play [White 32]\, an improvised shiv is transformed into a sculptural work\, juxtaposing materials of comfort and threat to reflect resilience and survival. \n\n\n\nTogether\, these works invite thoughtful dialogue about identity\, history\, and the role of art in confronting systems of power. \n\n\n\nMorning Muse offers a welcoming way to engage with art and community before work\, school\, or whatever the day holds. \n\n\n\nRegistration required. \n\n\n\nMembers: Free | General Public: $5 \n\n\n\nImage credits: \n\n\n\nJudy Chicago (United States\, born 1939)\, Signing the Dinner Party\, 2009-2012\, color lithograph on paper\, Taubman Museum of Art\, Gift of the Turner Carroll Gallery\, Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, in Honor of the Museum’s 75th Anniversary\, 2024.010 \n\n\n\nNadya Tolokonnikova Russia\, born 1989\, Knife Play [White 32]\, 2023\, mixed media (handmade shiv mounted with faux fur)\, Taubman Museum of Art\, Gift of the Turner Carroll Gallery\, Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, in Honor of the Museum’s 75th Anniversary\, 2024.017 \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? SUMMARY:VMFA on the Road - Virginia as America: Navigating Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness
DESCRIPTION:International Wine Festival 2027 \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n	\n \n\nVMFA on the Road presents the exhibition Virginia as America: Navigating Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness\, curated by Dr. Susan J. Rawles\, VMFA’s Elizabeth Locke Associate Curator of American Decorative Arts. \n\n\n\nFeaturing works of art from its permanent collection\, VMFA organized this exhibition in recognition of VA250\, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution\, the Revolutionary War\, and the Independence of the United States. \n\n\n\nVMFA on the Road provides residents of the Commonwealth the opportunity to see and experience authentic works of art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This state-of-the-art experience is an Artmobile for the 21st century. By way of VMFA’s Statewide Partners program\, which includes 1\,000 community centers\, small museums\, colleges\, and universities\, VMFA on the Road brings enriching art experiences to thousands—literally meeting people where they are. \n\n\n\nVirginia as America: Navigating Life\, Liberty\, and the Pursuit of Happiness explores the American ideal that was first expressed in the Declaration of Independence. The evocative phrase “Life\, Liberty\, and the pursuit of Happiness” founded a nation on a promise of “inalienable” rights\, a promise that has endured for 250 years. From the collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts\, 14 works of art—paintings\, prints\, and decorative objects—provide an alternative lens by which to understand our past\, encouraging us to consider the hopes and challenges of those founding principles and their persistent relevance for realizing a “more perfect union.” \n\n\n\nFree and welcoming to all. No registration required; walk-ins encouraged! \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? SUMMARY:Architectural Highlights Behind-the-Scenes Tour: November 7
DESCRIPTION:International Wine Festival 2027 \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n	\n \n\nDiscover the Taubman Museum of Art from a whole new perspective during this Architectural Highlights Tour\, an engaging\, behind-the-scenes experience that reveals the vision\, innovation\, and craftsmanship behind one of Roanoke’s most iconic landmarks that Architectural Digest named one of the best designed museums in the nation. \n\n\n\nLed in collaboration with local architects and individuals directly involved in the creation of the building\, this approximately 90-minute guided tour traces the Museum’s architectural story from the ground up. \n\n\n\nDesigned by Randall Stout and inspired by the natural forms of Virginia’s landscape\, the building’s soaring glass\, steel\, patinated zinc\, and locally sourced Hokie Stone come alive through expert insight and little-known details. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, guests will explore dramatic interior spaces\, flexible performance and gallery areas\, the “Vault” where artworks not on view are stored\, and the sophisticated systems that protect the Museum’s art while welcoming the community. \n\n\n\nThe tour culminates at the Top of the Taubman Balcony\, where sweeping views of downtown Roanoke\, the railroad corridor\, and surrounding landmarks provide a fitting finale. Guests are invited to raise a glass during a celebratory champagne toast to cap off this special experience. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a design enthusiast\, architecture professional\, or curious local\, this special tour offers rare access\, compelling stories\, and a memorable way to experience the Taubman Museum of Art. \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving?
