SUMMARY:Conversation with the Curator: Mokha Laget
DESCRIPTION:Professional Development Workshop for Educators \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n	\n \n\nJoin the Taubman Museum of Art for a special Conversation with the Curator featuring artist Mokha Laget\, whose newly commissioned mural celebrates the Museum’s 75th anniversary. \n\n\n\nLaget will be joined by Katie Hirsch\, Deputy Director of Exhibitions\, for a discussion about the inspiration\, process\, and ideas behind the new work. \n\n\n\nCreated specifically for the Taubman\, Laget’s mural draws inspiration from the Museum’s striking architecture\, designed by acclaimed architect Randall Stout\, as well as the surrounding Blue Ridge landscape and the layered histories of the Roanoke Valley. Through her signature language of bold geometric abstraction\, Laget translates architectural forms\, shifting planes\, and regional color into a vibrant composition that invites viewers to see the Museum in a new way. \n\n\n\nDuring this conversation\, Laget and Hirsch will explore how the mural came to life—from the artist’s early ideas and design process to the themes embedded in the final work. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will also highlight how elements of the mural reference the region’s geology\, natural environment\, and cultural history\, including the Blue Ridge Mountains\, the movement of water in the landscape\, and the architectural materials of the Museum itself. \n\n\n\nThis conversation offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from the artist about how architecture\, landscape\, and abstraction intersect in her work—and how the Taubman’s iconic building served as a starting point for the mural’s design. \n\n\n\nFollowing the discussion\, guests will have the opportunity to view the mural and experience the work firsthand. \n\n\n\nFree and welcoming to all. Registration required. \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? Click here to learn more and join today! \n\n\n\nAbout Hung Lui and Modern Time: \n\n\n\nBorn in Changchun\, China\, in 1948\, Hung Liu’s life unfolded amid the political and cultural upheavals of 20th-century China\, including the Cultural Revolution.  \n\n\n\nTrained in Socialist Realism at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing\, she immigrated to the United States in 1984 to attend the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of California at San Diego\, where she was exposed to conceptual and postmodern practices.  \n\n\n\nModern Time reflects this cross-cultural dialogue. Based on a 1960s photograph of a daydreaming cafeteria worker\, the painting shows the same woman twice at a long table.  \n\n\n\nOn the right\, she sits beneath portraits of Karl Marx\, Friedrich Engels\, Vladimir Lenin\, and Joseph Stalin\, evoking the promise of and weight of a socialist utopia.   \n\n\n\nOn the left\, she appears beneath portraits by — and in one case of — artist Vincent van Gogh\, introducing a contrasting vision of modern life rooted in individuality\, emotion\, and instability.   \n\n\n\nLiu does not offer these sides as a simple choice between East and West or politics and art. Instead\, she allows them to exist side by side\, much as her own life bridged cultures.  \n\n\n\nThe Mao-era clocks remind us that time and history move forward regardless of ideology.  \n\n\n\nModern Time was one of nine works censored in a planned 2019 solo exhibition in Beijing\, which was ultimately cancelled. This censorship mirrors the work’s questions about power\, control\, and historical memory\, emphasizing Liu’s point that history remains contested and unresolved. \n\n\n\n\n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? SUMMARY:Architectural Highlights Behind-the-Scenes Tour: June 6
DESCRIPTION:Professional Development Workshop for Educators \n \n	\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n\n	\n \n\nDiscover the Taubman Museum of Art from a whole new perspective during this Architectural Highlights Tour\, an engaging\, behind-the-scenes experience that reveals the vision\, innovation\, and craftsmanship behind one of Roanoke’s most iconic landmarks that Architectural Digest named one of the best designed museums in the nation. \n\n\n\nLed in collaboration with local architects and individuals directly involved in the creation of the building\, this approximately 90-minute guided tour traces the Museum’s architectural story from the ground up. \n\n\n\nDesigned by Randall Stout and inspired by the natural forms of Virginia’s landscape\, the building’s soaring glass\, steel\, patinated zinc\, and locally sourced Hokie Stone come alive through expert insight and little-known details. \n\n\n\nAlong the way\, guests will explore dramatic interior spaces\, flexible performance and gallery areas\, the “Vault” where artworks not on view are stored\, and the sophisticated systems that protect the Museum’s art while welcoming the community. \n\n\n\nThe tour culminates at the Top of the Taubman Balcony\, where sweeping views of downtown Roanoke\, the railroad corridor\, and surrounding landmarks provide a fitting finale. Guests are invited to raise a glass during a celebratory champagne toast to cap off this special experience. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a design enthusiast\, architecture professional\, or curious local\, this special tour offers rare access\, compelling stories\, and a memorable way to experience the Taubman Museum of Art. \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving? Guests are invited to raise a glass during a celebratory champagne toast to cap off this special experience. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a design enthusiast\, architecture professional\, or curious local\, this special tour offers rare access\, compelling stories\, and a memorable way to experience the Taubman Museum of Art. \n\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n Add to Calendar\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Driving?
