Katherine J. Parkin, Ph.D.

In conjunction with our 2018 banner exhibit, DRIVE! Iconic American Cars and Motorcycles, this year's speaker will be Katherine J. Parkin, Ph.D. Professor of History at Monmouth University and author of Women at the Wheel: A Century of Buying, Driving and Fixing Cars.

Women at the Wheel analyzes women’s experience with the car, from learning to drive and getting a license, buying a car, taking the wheel, ensuring its upkeep, and finally, the many ways we have associated women and car.  Women have been driving for more than 100 years and are now the majority of drivers; this book examines that experience by considering the social and cultural responses to women at the wheel.

Published in August 2017, the book has received national acclaim and is winner of the Emily Toth Award for best book in in women's studies and popular culture.

Anne Fralin Honoree: Mrs. Charlotte Porterfield

Sheila S. Strauss Art Venture Award: The Burton Center for Arts & Technology
