Unhemmed: Fashion Transformed in the 21st Century

Friday, November 13, 2020 - Sunday, February 14, 2021

In the spirit of the special boldness, creativity, and style that have characterized the heights of fashion, Unhemmed: Fashion Transformed in the 21st Century features the foremost contemporary work of international designers who are currently leading the field and also breaking new ground in the transformation of the industry. Co-curated by one of fashion’s powerhouse stylists and Dr. Patrick Shaw Cable, Chief Curator and Deputy Director of Exhibitions and Collections at the Taubman Museum of Art, this original exhibition assembles a stunning array of works by diverse creators at the forefront of today’s world(s) of fashion. Along with presenting what are among the boldest and most creative fashion visions of today, the exhibition explores the many different ways fashion has exploded into different realms such as inclusivity, sustainability, and celebrity within the 21st century. For this singular ticketed banner exhibition, the Taubman will completely transform its two largest, adjacent exhibition halls, the Carilion Clinic Gallery and Special Exhibition Gallery, with original colors, architectural designs, video, and lighting to create dramatic vignettes that complement the cutting-edge designs on view.

Treating several key and sometimes overlapping themes in 21st-century fashion, Unhemmed: Fashion Transformed in the 21st Century presents forward-thinking designs rarely shown outside of the traditional fashion capitals. Moving beyond traditional monographic, historic, or specifically themed exhibitions, the show unveils the best of the new and provides a broad outline of the significant transformations that have occurred in fashion in recent years. Among topics to be explored are the new frontier of sustainability and the freshly invigorated realms of gender fluidity and socio-political expression in fashion. The exhibition also looks at the outstanding visions of young designers who creatively revitalize established names. By looking at today’s transformed and transformative world(s) of fashion through the eyes of one of today’s most creative stylists, Unhemmed: Fashion Transformed in the 21st Century breaks the bounds of previous exhibitions, not only offering the best new international designs for our pleasure but also sketching out the shake-ups and evolving borders of fashion production, consumption, and promotion.
