Lunar New Year with Local Colors + Roanoke Valley Sister Cities

Celebrate Lunar New Year, Year of the Rat, with dragon dances, martial arts performances, singing and more! Bring the whole family out to learn about the cultural traditions of our Asian friends and neighbors right here in southwest Virginia.

From meeting the performers to creating your own Year of the Rat-themed artwork in Art Venture, the Museum’s hands-on creativity center for kids, this is a fun, FREE event you don’t want to miss!

Lunar New Year is presented by Local Colors, Roanoke Valley Sister Cities, and the Taubman Museum of Art. 

Art Venture is open and FREE to everyone on this day from 10am-5pm!

Activities offered on this day and through Friday, February 7, include:

  • Bamboo Brush Paintings
  • Paper Lanterns
  • Chinese Coin Impressions

No registration necessary -- walk-ins encouraged!

2:30pm | Blue Ridge PBS Screening: "No Passport Required" | Auditorium | FREE
This show follows internationally acclaimed chef Marcus Samuselsson, who travels across the United States to explore and celebrate the wide-ranging diversity of immigrant traditions andcuisine woven into American food and culture. The episode will focus on Chinese food as a tie-in to the Lunar New Year celebration.

11am & 4pm | Opening of Tao Hua Yuan Ji Pop-Up Book by Colette Fu | Auditorium | FREE

Come and see the world's largest pop-up book created by artist Colette Fu! Visitors are invited to crawl inside this massive creation. It will be on display for viewing the whole day.
