Summer Camps

Join the Taubman Museum of Art for a summer of creative learning!
10 weeks available for children ages 5 - 14! 8:30am – 12:30pm Monday – Friday

Stretch the imagination and expand art skills through the TMA summer camps! Camp participants will draw inspiration from our galleries, special guest artist demonstrations, creative exercises and activities. Explore a variety of artistic techniques, styles, and materials. An art show will take place on Friday 12:00pm of each week of camp, showcasing the work by camp participants for their friends and families to enjoy.

Each weekly Summer Camp is $175 per child or $150 for children covered by family memberships. $10 off for each subsequent camp or sibling registration

Camps for Ages 5-8:

Sculpt, Build and Explore: June 5-9
What can you sculpt, what can you build?  Do you like to design and create your own buildings or sculpt clay animals and people?  This camp explores the way artists, architects and inventors create in three dimensions!  Campers will use a wide variety of materials such as clay, wire, metal, wood and recycled materials to create sculptures, assemblages, mobiles and papier – mache plants and animals .  Campers will work with a variety of sculpting materials, to create their own city to be displayed during the camper art show. Clay Creations: June 26-30
Looking for a hands-on way to get creative this summer? Join us for an introduction to the world of clay and ceramics! This week-long camp will provide plenty of opportunities to get your hands messy with a variety of clay techniques, such as hand-building, slab work, sculpture, and imprinting. Campers will get to experience all the museum has to offer, with projects inspired by Paul Villinski’s exhibit in the galleries, as well as his installation in the museum’s atrium, for a well-rounded Taubman experience! Paint, Print & Play: July 10-14
Get your creative juices flowing with this multi-media camp! Campers will experiment with watercolors, tempera paint, and a variety of unique materials to produce works of art in fun and experimental ways. From exciting art gallery exploration and Art Venture free play, to funky painting styles, there is sure to be a new favorite activity for you in this camp. Register Now

Textile Adventures: August 14-18
Do you like to experiment with art materials that differ from the typical pencils and paints? If so, this is the camp for you! Come create with us as we explore the world of textile art. Using fabric, yarn and thread, campers will test fabric dying methods, kid-friendly weaving practices, wrapping techniques and more as we delve into the colorful world of textiles. Register Now


Camps for Ages 8-11:

Clay Creations: June 12-16
Looking for a creative adventure this summer? Join us for a one-week intensive learning experience in the world of clay and ceramics! There will be plenty of opportunities to get your hands messy, with a variety of clay techniques, including hand-building, slab work, sculpture, imprinting, and the chance to use the potter’s wheel. Gathering inspiration from Romare Bearden’s work in the galleries, campers will have a well-rounded museum experience! Register Now

The Art of Upcycling: July 17-21
Do you like to make art out of recycled and found objects?   Be inspired by contemporary artists like Paul Villinski and his installation, Flower Bomber and exhibit, Farther.  We will use cardboard, bottle caps, paint chips, old CD’s, books and  recycled paper to create exciting sculptures, mobiles, jewelry, mixed media paintings and more!  Make handmade paper and pulp animals, create mobiles, wind chimes and stabiles.  Learn how to turn old books into cut paper sculptures and pop up scenes.  All week we will work on a large collaborative collage in the museums atrium to be showcased at the camp art show 12pm on Friday. Drawing: Textures, Animals, Landscapes, Figures and Manga: July 24-28
Discover the magic of drawing as we explore a wide variety of subjects, materials, and techniques during this week of camp. Materials will range from pencils and pens to markers and oil pastels.  Surrounded by art, nature, history, and architecture, campers will enjoy the endless ideas and experiences that downtown Roanoke inspires. This camp is sure to satisfy and challenge any budding artist! Register Now
