The Taubman Museum of Art recognizes the diversity of our general public's abilities and needs, and we offer a variety of programs and services to ensure the accessibility of the museum and its exhibitions.
The following services are available:
All public areas of the museum are wheelchair accessible. An entry ramp is located at the security entrance behind the museum on Norfolk Avenue. The main entrance on Salem Avenue has power assist doors. Handicapped parking spaces are located behind the museum on Norfolk Avenue, where sidewalk access easily leads around the cafe to the main entrance on Salem Avenue.
Two public elevators provide access to the second floor. Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are located in the atrium and on the second floor in the multi-stalled restrooms (not family restrooms). Wheelchair spaces are provided for all events and programs.
There are five wheelchairs available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis from the front desk. Motorized wheelchairs are permitted. All activities on the Art Venture mezzanine are also offered in the work stations on the ground floor.
Large-print gallery guides and floor plans are available at the front desk and in Art Venture. Touch plate replicas of several pieces of the permanent collection available in Art Venture. An art history activity with a multi-sensory guide is available upon request in Art Venture.
Visual Descriptions — A docent can provide visual description during tours if requested three weeks prior the visit. The Taubman Museum of Art is collaborating with Voices of the Blue Ridge to bring multi-sensory programming to the museum.
Service animals are welcome.
Deaf and Hard of Hearing Accessibility
The museum’s Black Box Theatre and Advance Auto Parts Auditorium feature hearing amplification systems available with a two weeks' notice with the collaboration of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service Center. Audio amplification devices can also be requested for docent-lead tours with two weeks' notice.
A Sign Language Interpreter is available upon request three weeks prior to the visit or performance.
