Since this past summer I have been collaborating with Dr. Chris Williams at DREAMS Lab, Virginia Tech, and his student team, to bring a 3D printer into the Art Venture area. This gives the community an opportunity to learn how 3D printing is used in art, architecture, and engineering, as well as see the printer in action!
A 3D Printer can print almost any shape. By building a part layer-by-layer, a 3D Printer can make shapes that are impossible to make by any other method. It takes 20-45 minutes to print an object on the Makerbot Replicator depending on size. We will have a variety of examples on display in Art Venture as well as literature to read more about how a 3D printer works. During opening day, the DREAMS Lab team will be demonstrating 3D printing in our studio classroom so everyone can get a closer look and have all their questions answered. On subsequent Saturdays we will have designated demonstrations times.
